Suffering, treatment, rehabilitation, and mental and physical illness are just some of the issues common alcoholics deal with. Aside from those complications, alcoholism has been a devastating problem, especially in Ireland, for hundreds of years. But who is really feeling the detrimental effects that most people assume the alcoholics themselves have to deal with? Ireland is culturally known to be â€Å"a race of drunks† and the long lasting effects due to alcoholic dependence truly defeats not just the alcoholics, but their families lives as well. The Irish have been said to be â€Å"the most successful and accomplished immigrant group in the United States.† (BCS) Their hard work and determination however, is lost within their alcohol dependence. Providing for a family can be extremely challenging when there is a lack of money within the family. In the memoir â€Å"Angela’s Ashes,† written by Frank McCourt, Frank lives a scare life due to his Ireland born father Malachy’s, drinking problem. His problem caused an extreme level of deprivation within his family of money, food, sufficient clothing, etc. (FM) This scenario wasn’t just prevalent in the McCourt family, but in many families throughout the entire country of Ireland, as shown in the memoir.
